These are a Few of My Favorite Poets~
One of my all time favorite writers is Edgar Allan Poe. I’ve liked his work ever since I found a collection of all his writing when I was littler. Horror being my kind of thing, even back then, I read a lot of that book… I realized that Poe’s poems aren’t all always about the same things as his fiction, unlike what everyone seems to think. For example, the poems “Fairyland”, “Evening Star”, and “Israfel” are more lighthearted than say, “The Raven” or “Annabel Lee”… That’s not to say he’s all sunshine and rainbows in his poetry, because even those I listed are somewhat bittersweet… But to those who think all of Poe’s work is all exceedingly dark and dreary, think again!
Emily Dickinson is another of my favorite poets. Her style is awesome, and comes from nowhere else but her own secluded world where she lived her life. It is true she didn’t get out much to other places, but she got ‘out’ through her poetry instead. Her seeming slight randomness in her capitalization and dashes in her poems are fun to try for yourself. In doing so I saw it wasn’t as random as it looks, not at all! In fact, it was fun to get them to fit in with the tone of the poem I was writing, not just where it looks good, but where it belongs.

I also love Poe. His poems have this haunting quality that pulls you in and stays with the reader long after they’ve read them. I can still remember the first time I read Annabelle Lee and the way I felt after reading it. The Bells is another poem that has still stayed with me. The way that he reveals little by little as his poems go on to build suspense in the reader is a task not easily achieved. I admire him for his skill in writing powerful poetry.
