Write when you don't feel like it..

One of our first few classes I remember coming into class and being completely miserable because I had received a speeding ticket a few hours prior to class. I remember thinking I had no desire to be in class let alone write a poem. But we did end up having to write a poem that day. I found that writing made me feel a lot better. I also found being angry set a different tone to my poems and allowed me a different edge and aspect then the tone I usually use. I think maybe if we set a set time everyday to write a poem we can notice this influence that mood takes on our writing. If one day I sit down at eight am and I'm exhausted my poem my be lengthy and maybe seem to drag on. Another day I may feel ready to go and excited and my poem may be short and cheerful. I think this expands our muse because it forces us to work under different circumstances which forces our muse to constantly adjust.

  1. I agree with you, my mood at a certain time of day that I'm writing has a significant effect on my work. There were two whimsical poems I wrote this semester that were written late at night, when I was overtired and feeling creative. On the other hand, there were a few poems I wrote that didn't get very far because my mind felt rather lethargic and I had trouble connecting with my muse. I guess I could do as you suggest and start practicing forcing myself to write when I don't want to make it easier to connect with my muse...
