Working Alongside the Muses
I thought my ‘muse work’ up until this class was merely writing my favorite character, using everything about him to become the embodiment of the ‘Muse’. I found out that the muse isn’t just one thing, but just freely flowing words from your mind onto the paper. While I have written some of my muse work in class on that character, it seems more of the muse is just… letting go. It is incredibly freeing and awesome to be able to just write without worrying about what it will come out like. In poetry and even in my fiction, I usually get tripped up trying to do a set thing, like a certain ‘path’ or style I wanted to begin with. Yet beginning and going back to fix your writing should be two separate things. Poetry is a good way to get used to writing with the muse, but it has helped me write my short stories too. Not only does it get some interesting ideas down on paper before they leave my mind, it comes out more… me, more true to my personality. That is definitely something I strive for, no matter what I’m writing, even something like essays.
