Back in 2008, during my first year here at Oswego, I had taken a class (African American Lit) which we had to go to a couple presentations from people. One we had to go to was Sonia Sanchez’s presentation where she read her poems, and talked about other things. Before that class I had not heard of her, after hearing how she read her poetry it really changed the way I viewed what she wrote. It takes another perspective when the actual person reads their poems, like during our workshop. I think it was kind of neat that a presenter in our class used her as one of their poets. Some of Sonia Sanchez’s poems are very short but are very powerful and have strong meanings, some of which were written during the Black Arts movement. Anyways I found her reading very enjoyable and highly recommend it when she returns to Oswego.
you know, i really wish i would have gone to that. recently a spoken word poet came and performed at oswego, and he dealt with a lot of racial issues. i was hypnotized by it, and i wish i would have gotten the memo about sonia sanchez. so bummed
