Revision

As I'm going through and putting the finishing touches on my portfolio, I'm having a really hard time with revision. I don't mind writing the actual poem, but for some reason I dread revising it. I would much rather leave it the way it comes out the first time. Another problem I have is when I do revise a poem, the new poem I get is so different from the original, they might as well be two original poems. When I write poems, I write them the way I want them to sound the first time. So when I go through and revise them, thats why they seem to come out completely different. Maybe it has to do with me needing to write more freely. Maybe I should listen to my muse more intently instead of trying to write the poem to my liking the fist time. After revision, I usually like my original poem better anyway, so its hard for me to force myself to do this revisions required for portfolio.

  1. I can totally understand what you mean. I've nearly finished the revision process, but i'm stuck on one poem that I love. I think the way I wrote it originally is so much better than anything I can do with it. Its so hard to stick to the subject when you are trying to change the poem "substantially."
