Workshop

Since it is the end of the semester I thought it would be not only a good time to do these posts, but also to ask how everyone felt about the workshop part of the class. The lead up to workshop was interesting, but since it was introductory I had trouble focusing and showing up to every class. I enjoyed doing most of the exercises, but the class did not really become one of my favorites until we started doing the workshop. Sharing my own work was a little hard, but being able to tell other people what I thought of theirs was fun, especially how it made me feel. We had a lot of sappy stuff, a lot of funny stuff, some good nature stuff, and lots of good poetry. I really enjoyed reading so much material that was not written in the last century, and getting a chance to actually say something to the author. I feel like I was 'that kid' during workshop, but I could not keep my mouth shut. I'm not taking the next level next semester, but hope to get into it in the fall, and I hope to see some familiar faces there!

  1. I also enjoyed participating in workshop. I have trouble getting through some of the older poetry in old English, so it was refreshing to hear modern poetry written by our own classmates. I liked being able to give positive comments about their poetry. I know that receiving positive feedback was helpful to me, so I enjoyed being able to provide that to others.

  2. I’ve never done anything like workshop before, so this was fun for me. Being able to see what everyone thinks of you, to have someone else read your poem… It was great. However, when I had to read mine out loud it was pretty embarrassing, sort of. I liked how everyone had their own style, and it was fun to write comments back to them too!

  3. I agree with all of you. I really enjoyed workshop and truthfully wish we could have had at least one more round. It was helpful receiving feed back and being able to share my work at a peer level. I know some of my work was intense and quite personal but it was worth sharing!
I am done after this Spring but I will definitely continue writing poetry and using it as a way of expression.
