Syntax

I tried to post all weekend but apparently I can comment from my phone Internet but I cannot add new posts... very aggravating but it's the only Internet I have, unless I am on campus. Any way back to the topic at hand, which is poetry. Syntax Syntax refers to the order and sentence structure. Normal word order in English sentences is firmly fixed in the sequence subject - verb - object. In poetry, word order may be shifted around to emphasis, or heighten the connection between words. This is very difficult for me to wrap around for one main reason. I am an education major with a concentration in English; this means that I have had a great deal of education on grammar and it's proper uses. I find it very hard to break from that mind set. Also when I read poems I have to read them a few times in order to actually hear the correct syntax, I seem to auto correct the grammar while I read. I think if i read more poetry with this technique that eventually this difficulty that i am having will slowly dissipate. I am determined to work on this because I think it will be a great revising technique.

  1. I have the same feeling towards the syntax in poems sometimes. Since most poems are read a little differently than a novel or other form of literature, it's a little difficult at first to adjust. I keep reminding myself, however, that the poetry language is a very rich and artistic form of writing, and the techniques used in poetry separate itself from other types of writing.
