Rhyming

I don't understand why many people don't prefer exact rhyme in poems. Especially people saying how exact rhyme gives a poem a sense of comedy. Maybe it's just the grade school coming out of me, the way I learned it when I was a kid (Green eggs and ham). I think that rhyme gives poetry a flowing sensation that other types of writing can't experience or give to its reader.

  1. I agree with you, I like when people use rhyme in their poems because to me it gives the poem a rhythm. I also really like the sound it produces in a poem. Like for example the ones that are being read in class by students have really good rhyme words. For me, I don't like when I use it because I feel it does not sound well since I use cheesy simple words, or because I as the writer and reader can tell which rhyme word came first and it shouldn't be that way.

  2. I honestly try and stay away from rhyme. Not because it is an inferior writing technique but due to the fact that rhyme is an exacting method. The writer needs to be able to have an extensive vocabulary and understanding of the phonics of words in order to be able to write a poem with rhyme without sounding infantile. Beyond that I do believe that rhyme should be used sparingly especially if the poet is limited.

  3. Sometimes slant rhyme gets on my nerves. Its cool, but only if its words that do kind of go together. A lot of times I cannot see why in the world the two words are rhyming and it throws off the poem for me. I feel like it has to be used carefully, but then so does exact rhyme. I feel like a little bit of each type makes the poem more intricate and interesting.

  4. Before I took this class, I too used rhyming. Pretty much in every one of my poems. But, this class has made me look at it a little differently. I can see both sides now, where as before it was more of a straight, level path for me. I don't think that this class is used to show you one way or the other, or tell you that in many cases your poems will do better without it, but to open up your mind to the idea of trying it both ways. I do agree that rhyming gives poetry a different feel than other thing, and I encourage you to stick with that if you like it because there are certainly plenty of other writers who do as well. Just keep your options open!
