eenie meenie miney moe

i seemed to have a lot of trouble picking which poems to use in workshop. the poems that i wrote that i'm most passionate about are extremely personal. for that reason, i was afraid to share them with the class because i didn't want to force myself to be that vulnerable. the poems that i did pick were somewhat personal to me, but they were more spur of the moment poems that i wasn't extremely attached to. by submitting poems that i wasn't that attached to made it easier to get critiqued on. if i submitted one that was extremely personal and emotional for me and got critiqued on it, it would probably make me feel terrible about myself since i put my heart and soul into those poems. it was just easier to be able to put a "quick fix" poem up for discussion. did any one else feel like that during workshop?

  1. I would certainly have to agree with you there. It was pretty difficult for me to pick which poems to share in workshop. The first one was not personal in anyway and actually wasn't even close to any of my favorite poems that I have written. When you write something so increadibly personal it is hard to take critque on it lightly because you feel like they are being critical of what you went through rather than the poem itself. It is never fun to put yourself out there and to be completely vulnerable. Even more so in a class room where yes you might know a couple people who you would be comfertable sharing something personal with but they rest of the class you do not know. You don't know how they are going to take the poem or react. I know I also only picked poems that were somewhat personal to me so that way when I get critiqued it is easier to not take it so personaly because even I knew that the poems needed some work.

  2. i definitely know where you are coming from with the selection process. myself i used a poem to me that was very personal and the problem with me was that i thought that it was great the way it is and yet everyone else didnt seem to think the same, but that just made me think more clear when it came to revising it and making it better, which then allowed me to show more of my emotion in the poem the emotion that it deserved. but yes it is a very vulnerable thing to do to put your heart out there and to hear peoples opinion that are not as positive as your own. the thing is these comments make your writing better. the thing is that we as a reader dont know whether the poem is a complete work of muse or true inspiration you are the only one who knows where the poem came from and you can tell us either way.
