Poetry and other classes
This poetry class has had many effects on other areas in my life, including other classes. I took this class because it is my last semester and I found that I would have some open spaces in my schedule to take elective classes. Another class I chose to take was an art class. The class is art 102 (studio) and I have found poetry to be very useful in that class. One of the things my professor stresses for that class is the importance of titles on all of our work. A lot of times it is very difficult to try to pick a title out for a piece of work I have done, especially if it is abstract. I have found that if I write a poem on it, however, it is much easier to find a word or a phrase to describe it. My art professor also has us create art work based on a particular topic, and then do a write up on why we did what we did. For example, our last project had to be an abstract representation of the difference between males and females. I was finding difficulty in deciding the best way to arrange my piece, so I wrote a poem on life and how males and females fit into life together. The poem helped me come up with the idea of creating a river to describe the flow of life and then use my abstract pieces of male and female and have them floating down this river but in a separate way.

I also feel like this poetry connects with my other classes. I am an English concentrate so I am taking ENG 360 and ENG 210 which both relate to a lot of the material we are focusing on in this class. ENG 210 is my Greek Mythology class where throughout the semester have referred to the Muse and its influence on Greek Literature. The Muse was the inspiration for famous texts such as "The Odyssey" and "The Aeneid." The Muse allowed the authors of these two texts to expand and be more creative with this ancient time period. From taking this poetry class I was able to see where the authors were coming from and why they used such diction and so forth in telling their tales of Greek Tales. In my ENG 360 class we focus on the history of literature and its basis in different cultures around the world. This poetry class has helped me better analyze poetry which has better equipped me for understanding and writing poems in my other classes. I think this class is one many students should take because it provides you with many necessary tools in becoming both a better reader and writer on a more analytical level.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I am in a creative non-fiction class and after working with the poetry muse, my prose flow more freely. They take on new and deeper dimensions then they would otherwise. I also found that it gives me the confidence to be more flexible in my writing.
