Since I was in Middle School, I have always been interesting in writing poetry. Around this time, there was a show that I enjoyed watching that was called Def Poetry. This show gave me a greater interest in poetry. I am a real fan of spoken word poets. The link below is my one of my favorite spoken writers performing on Def Poetry, hope you guys enjoy this poem as much as I do.
Oveous Maximus- On HBO Def Poetry- Uncensored
This class really brings out a different side of my writing. While checking in with my Muse, I connect to everything that is surrounding me showing my inner deepest emotions. I am very shy and almost never want to share my work in class, I hope to soon overcome that fear and be able to open up and read my poetry aloud in class.

Thanks for that Rita... did you happen to check out Oveous on campus this semester? Very good performance. I'm a pretty big fan of the spoken word, i've been to quite a few shows and even put on shows that featured these poets. Spoken word is a great form of poetry because the poet can utilize voice, sound and inflections to imbue different meanings into the words, situations, and the overall poem. I always feel inspired when I go to a show, and tend to write alot after watching it. Good luck fighting your fear, once you read a poem to people you too will be inspired. ~Chance Carmichael~
ReplyDeleteThank you for the post on Def poetry. I have never had the opportunity to view much of it and unfortunately missed the performance when Oveous came to campus this semester. I really did enjoy his work on the video you shared. Like Chance said, spoken word really does give to the reader in different aspects then written poetry can because of the voice, sound and inflections. I hope that by watching more spoken word poets you can receive inspiration to conquer your fears, Oveous has certainly inspired me. Best of Luck.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the encouragements....i did happen to check out his performance on campus. When I saw the flyer I was so excited to know that he was coming to perform on campus. I have seen him before perform when I was home in NYC.
ReplyDeleteDef poetry is defiantly my favorite kind of poetry. Brianne you should look up more Def Poetry performance on YouTube when you get the chance. They are amazing and will move you and make you change the way you write poems. They are great influences.
I completely understand where you are coming from. It is also hard for me to read in front of a class because i am very shy. However, through workshop i feel it can help us somewhat overcome that fear. This def poerty was a good piece to come across. Thank you for putting this out there.
